কোরিয়ান বর্ণমালা কে হানগুল (한글) বলা হয়। 한글 এর 한 অর্থ হলো ” কোরিয়ান” আর 글 অর্থ হলো “বর্ন”

এইভাবে হানগুল এর অর্থ দাঁড়ায় কোরিয়ান বর্ণমালা। এটা শুধু মাত্র কোরিয়ান writing system । হানগুল দক্ষিণ কোরিয়া এবং উত্তর কোরিয়া তে ব্যবহৃত হয়, কিন্তু উত্তর কোরিয়াতে এটাকে বলা হয় “chosongul” ।

কেউ কেউ মনে করে হানগুল হল কোরিয়ান ভাষা, কিন্তু কোরিয়ান ভাষা কে বলা হয় “হানগুগ অ” (한국어) অথবা হানগুক মাল (한국 말).

কোরিয়ান ভাষায় বর্ণমালা অনুশীলন খুবই সহজ।আর এই সহজ কাজটি সম্পাদন করেন তৎকালীন কোরিয়ার রাজা- “সেজোং দে ওয়াং”, তিনি ১৪৪৩ সালে কোরিয়ান বর্ণমালা হানগূল (한글) আবিষ্কার করেন। এবং 1946 সালে অফিসিয়াল রাইটিং সিস্টেম হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি প্রাপ্ত হয়। কোরিয়াতে অক্টোবর মাসের 9 তারিখ কোরিয়ান বর্ণমালা দিবস (한글 날) পালন করা হয়।

কোরিয়ান ভাষার বর্ণগুলো খুবই সহজবোধ্য, পদ্ধতিসিদ্ধ ও বিজ্ঞানসম্মত হওয়ায় দ্রুত শেখা ও লেখা সম্ভব হয়।এইজন্য বৈজ্ঞানিক ব্যাখ্যার পর্যালোচনায় সহজ বর্ণমালা হিসাবে স্বীকৃতি পেয়ে হানগূল (한글) (কোরিয়ান বর্নমালা) ১৯৯৭ সালে ইউনেস্কোর বিশ্বস্মরণীকার মর্যাদা পায়।
